XM650, XM655, and CLK104 Add-On Cards Hardware Description

This page describes the add-on cards that are part of the RFSoC Evaluation Kits.

Table of Contents

Introduction

The XM650, XM655, and CLK104 add-on cards are included with each purchase of the Zynq® UltraScale+™ RFSoC ZCU216/ZCU208 kits to help users quickly and efficiently bring up the board and evaluate the the excellent performance of the on board silicon. The XM650 card is specially suited for fast validation of the N79 band, no external cables or connections are needed. The XM655 card allows user to perform a more in depth evaluation of the sub-6Ghz frequency range, and use their own external baluns/filters . The CLK104 offers clock source flexibility and extended multi-tile and multi-board synchronization (MTS) capability. More information about MTS capability can be found here https://xilinx-wiki.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/A/pages/799015000 .

The add-on cards included with each purchase of the ZCU216/ZCU208 Evaluation Kits are:

  • XM650 N79 Band Loopback Add-on Card

  • XM655 Breakout Add-on Card

  • CLK104 RF Clock Add-on Card

ZCU216 Base Board

The XM650/XM655 utilizes the RFMC 2.0 connectors. Refer to the Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC ZCU216 Evaluation Kit Product Page and for more information.

ZCU208 Base Board

The XM650/XM655 utilizes the RFMC 2.0 connectors. Refer to the Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC ZCU208 Evaluation Kit Product Page for more information.

XM650 N79 Band Loopback Add-on Card

The XM650 add-on card is a DAC to ADC loopback evaluation with N79 band baluns and filters. A major advantage of the XM650 is that no external cables or connectivity is require to connect the DACs to the ADCs.

Mounted on the card are baluns and band pass filters corresponding to N79 Band F = 4700MHz, band pass 4400-5000MHz.

In addition, pin headers allow control of customized RF-line up such as an AGC loop, which connect to IOs on the PL side of the RFSOC as well as board power supplies.

More in depth information about the XM650 add-on cards can be found in Appendix C of the ZCU216 Evaluation Board Users Guide (UG1390) and ZCU208 Evaluation Board Users Guide (UG1410).

XM655 Breakout Add-On Card

The XM655 add-on card allows for a more customized RF line-up than the XM655 and is a full break-out of 16T DAC channels and 16R ADC channels (8T8R for the ZCU208) to SMA connectivity using Carlisle-CoreHC2 assembly connections.

Standalone baluns and different band pass filters are mounted on the card and the XM655 card allows for 2 channel connections in 4 different bands spanning the sub-6Ghz range:

Low: 10MHz - 1GHz

Mid-Low: 1GHz - 4GHz

Mid-High: 4GHz - 5GHz

High: 5GHz - 6GHz

The frequency range and DAC/ADC connections for each band is available for reference directly on the XM655 PCB itself (marked on the silk screen).

In addition, pin headers allow control of customized RF-line up such as an AGC loop which connect to IOs on the PL side of the RFSOC as well as board power supplies.

More in depth information about the XM655 add-on cards can be found in Appendix C of the ZCU216 Evaluation Board Users Guide (UG1390) and ZCU208 Evaluation Board Users Guide (UG1410).

CLK104 RF Clock Add-on Card

The CLK104 is designed for use with ZCU216 and ZCU208 evaluation boards. It provides an ultra low-noise, wideband, RF clock source for the analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters (ADCs and DACs). The clock distribution PLL (U2, LMK04828B) can provide a reference clock for the integrated PLLs of the RFSoC device. The CLK104 can also provide a direct RF sampling clock for all ADC channels and all DAC channels. The CLK104 can support multi-tile and multi-board synchronization.

  • LMK04828B Output clocks route directly to the Samtec board-to-board connector into:

    • Tiles DAC230 and ADC226

    • RF SYSREF

    • PL SYSREF

    • PL CLK

  • LMX Outputs clocks route directly to on board SMPs.

    • Jumper SMP-to-SMP cables can be connected to provide direct sampling clocks to:

    • Tiles DAC229 and ADC225

  • SYNC can be used to synchronize multiple ZCU216/ZCU208 boards

More information can be found in the CLK104 RF Clock Add-on Card (UG1437)
